The nanny story: An introduction.

When I found out my life was going to get uprooted from all my friends and family, I told my husband that there was no way in hell I was going to take care of two 5 month olds on my own in a town where I didn't know a soul. For moving our new family halfway across the country, my husband agreed that I could get some part-time help during the day to help with the babes. But how to find this person? Couldn't just go off of referrals, we didn't know anyone! So we bit the bullet and went through a nanny agency, paid their ridiculous $2500 up front yearly fee and hired a nanny to help me out for 5 hours a day.

At first this lady was cool. She loved doing activities with the babies and was just so happy all the time. She seemed to like my children a lot more than I did most of the time and I was just happy to have someone who talked back to me. As the months wore on, I realized there was something not quite right. She seemed very childish herself at times and didn't seem like she was all there in the head.

The pivotal point for me came when I walked into the playroom and she was sitting on the floor clutching my daughter to her rocking body, crying. I asked her "What's the matter!", scared that something was dreadfully wrong with my child. She looked up at me with weepy eyes and said, "I feel so sorry for this little girl..." I said, "WHY?!?", still thinking she dropped her on her head or something. She continued, "...because someday this little girl is going to grow up and get married, and she will have to have children that don't like her, and she'll have a husband that hits her, and no one will ever really love her...boohoohoo."

It was at this point where my eyes widened and I slowly took my daughter from her hands and backed away slowly. I told her to take the rest of the day off because she was obviously having a bad day. She came back the next day and said she was sorry for getting so emotional but she was depressed and my children were the only thing that brought her happiness.

This was the start of my spiral into insanity with this woman. I lived in fear that if I fired her, she would do something tragic and I would end up on the news. This story is merely an introduction, there will be more to come later.
